The piece of slate (very thin) measures 2-¾" x 5", the tag measuring about the same size. The period manuscript on the tag reads: "Slate from the roof of the Court House Vicksburg, Miss. broken off during the siege and picked up on the 4th day of July 1863, when the troops occupied the place." The 72nd Illinois was called the "Chicago Board of Trade" regiment. According to the Civil War Database, "In the desperate charge at Vicksburg on May 22nd, it participated with the highest honor to itself losing some 130 of its number in killed, wounded and missing, but fighting as bravely as men could fight until the last." It was Colonel Frederick A. Starring who led the regiment. This relic was from his memorabilia album.
