Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale (Albert Victor Christian Edward; 1864-1892) was the eldest child of the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra). From the time of his birth, he was second in the line of succession to the British throne, but did not become king or Prince of Wales because he died before both his father and paternal grandmother Queen Victoria. Some authors have argued that he was the serial killer known as Jack the Ripper.Autograph Letter Signed "Dufferin and Ava" (Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st marquis of Dufferin and Ava 1826-1902), written to Lady Metcalfe, Jan 16 (1892), black mourning rules, 3pp. In part, "We have no private news about the terrible sad event ... as you say, the moment at which it occurred has made it really tragic ... one feels most deeply for Princess May & her parents ... I don't like to be seen about until after the funeral ..."The Duke of Clarence became engaged to Princess May December 7, 1891 & the wedding was fixed for February 27, 1892. But, the Duke died on January 14 of pneumonia. The funeral was on January 20. Princess May (Later Queen May) married the Duke's brother (later George V).
