The Union soldier's 3pp letter, written on the striking Berdan's Sharp Shooters letter sheet. This letter sheet was produced by L.N. Rosenthal Lithographic Company of Philadelphia which was owned by Max and Linis Rosenthal who were considered the most famous Jewish Lithographers. The writer, John Wilson, enlisted on 7/1/1861 at New York City, NY as a 1st Lieutenant and was commissioned into "B" Co. US Volunteers 1st SharpShooters, promoted Capt 11/15/1861, Major 12/15/1863. He was Mustered Out on 8/28/1864. Datelined, Camp of Instruction, Berdan's U.S. Sharp Shooters, Washington D.C., November 14, 1861. In part, "We expect to leave here in about two weeks for South Carolina. Our company had a flag presented this week by the citizens of Albany. The troubles I mentioned as existing in our camp ... have been settled. Capt. Marting sent in his resignation a week ago. The Col. would not accept it and told him to withdraw it. But the Capt would not until the Major was dismissed from the Regiment. His case stands yet Out Lieut. Col. has resigned, so has our oldest line officer all on account of the Major. .. I have been over the river visiting Alexandria. I saw the house Ellsworth was killed in. .... The place for you is Sutler for the Regiment. You can make a thousand dollars a month easy with a good Regiment. ...."
