Simon Cameron (1799-1889) was an American businessman and politician who represented Pennsylvania in the United States Senate and served as United States Secretary of War under President Abraham Lincoln at the start of the American Civil War. Nice pair includes a Letter Signed and the Free Franked cover. The 1pp Letter Signed "Simon Cameron" as Secretary of war, written to David B. Stacy, datelined War Department Washington, March 23, 1861. In part, "... we have known each other too long to require an apology ... I know not what may be the purpose in the State Dept. in regards to Dr. Heap. ..." ... plus, The letter is accompanied by the original envelope which is free franked "Simon Cameron".
