Union letter written by Oliver B. Walker who Oo 7/16/1861 he mustered into "C" Co. MA 13th Infantry and on 12/11/1861 he transferred into "D" Co. MA 24th Infantry. Walker died of wounds on 1/3/1864. The 4 page penciled letter to his Father and Mother is datelined Headquarters Co. D. 24th Reg. Roanoke Island N.C. February 13th 1862. In part, "You will have heard all about the successfull landing of our expedition at this point ..We have a brave set of fellows here, and they marched forward through the mud and rain .. to meet the enemy with dauntless courage and endured the fatigues of a nine mile forced march over a road for most part knee deep in mire and water in pursuit of the flying enemy ... I wish you could see our prisoners. They are a motley set, clothed in all sorts of uniforms and truly a hard looking crowd. ... They all use Bowie knives some of them nearly two feet long and the most savage looking things that I ever have seen. No men but savages or devils would bring such weapons into a civilized warfare. We found these knives thrown away all through the swamps, on the sea shore, buried in their houses ... Keep the little button given me by a prisoner as a memento for your own. ... The button is present, affixed to cover of a folder Oliver's parents used to keep his letters.
