WISE, Henry Alexander (1806-1876) was an American lawyer and politician from Virginia. He was a U.S. Representative and Governor of Virginia, and US minister (ambassador) to Brazil. As Governor, he was much involved in the 1859 trial of abolitionist John Brown. During the American Civil War, he was a general in the Confederate States Army.Autograph Letter Signed "Henry A. Wise" 3pp, tipped onto carrier shet, very fine. Writing as a US Representative, datelined, Washington H.R. March 17th, 1840. Wise is writing a colleague regarding the House's business for the preceding days including an effort to re-establish the "Gov't Bank, "... he will make an able and efficient speech for the opposition in the South and I hope he may be heard. We must conquer these writches..."
