Framed period print, 13-1/2" x 9-1/2" (site, not removed from frame) published by Sarony & Major, NYC, 1848, titled "THE DEATH OF THE GALLANT MAJOR RINGOLD, Who was mortally wounded during the engagement of the 8th of May & died on the 10th 1846." Hand tinted shows Major Samuel Ringgold with wounds to his legs, supported by two fellow officers, his horse on the ground next to him, also suffering from wounds. Clean print, older frame.The Battle of Palo Alto (Spanish: Batalla de Palo Alto) was the first major battle of the Mexican-American War and was fought on May 8, 1846, on disputed ground five miles (8 km) from the modern-day city of Brownsville, Texas. A force of some 3,700 Mexican troops - most of the Army of The North - led by General Mariano Arista engaged a force of approximately 2,300 United States troops - the Army of Occupation led by General Zachary Taylor.
