The original letter, of which this is a photographic copy, was written by Abraham Lincoln after his election as President. It is addressed to John Hanks, of Malone County Illinois, who was intimately associated with our late Chief Magistrate during the years of his early manhood; and shared with him the perils of flat-boating, and hardships of pioneer life in the wilderness." The actual letter, "Springfield, Jan. 28, 1861, Dear John, I now think I will pass Decatur, going to Coles, on the day after to-morrow - Wednesday the 30th of the month- Be ready, and go along- Yours as ever, A. Lincoln".”.
