Clear The Way!! (Forbes, 1917) World War I poster (20" X 30"). Liberty with flag over sailors at gun. 4th Liberty Loan. Just as TV commercials today spread catch phrases overnight, printed advertising and posters had the same effect in the early part of the 20th Century. "Clear The Way" became not only a slogan, but a daily utterance in crowded spaces. This dynamic image of a flag-draped Miss Liberty seeming to protect a naval gun battery was designed by Howard Chandler Christy (1873 - 1952), who was at the height of his fame when it appeared. He earned his spurs as a wartime artist when he accompanied U.S. troops to Cuba in 1898, an experience that stood him in good stead when he was called on to create his famed series of patriotic World War I posters. Very Fine condition.
