John Bell (1796-1869) was an American politician, attorney, and planter who was a candidate for President of the United States in the election of 1860. Although a slaveholder, Bell was one of the few Southern politicians to oppose the expansion of slavery to the territories in the 1850s, and he campaigned vigorously against secession in the years leading up to the American Civil War. Autograph Note Signed "Jno Bell" as speaker of the house. Bell responds to Congressman Burges' request to admit his friend to the floor of the house, June 5, 1835, 4pp. Bell.s response is on page 4, in full, "The officers of the House will amit your friend-but he must be admitted as a reporter."
