This certificate, accompanied with a reference determining its necessity, was issued to Edward Ewen on August 26, 1780 for his services in the First Regiment of the Connecticut Continental Army from January 1779 to August 21, 1780. The accompanying note was written and signed by Colonel Josiah Starr of Connecticut. The note proves Ewen's service in the First Regiment and supports the claim that Ewen is owed thirty-nine pounds and sixteen shillings for his service. Joseph Starr served in Connecticut's Continental Army from May 1, 1775 until he retired on January 1, 1781. Initially being enlisted as only a Captain, his excellent service allowed for him to be promoted all the way to Colonel in just a few years. Josiah Starr (Conn). Captain 4th Connecticut, 1st May to December, 1775; Lieutenant-Colonel of Swift's Connecticut State Regiment, July to November, 1776; Lieutenant-Colonel 7th Connecticut, 1st January, 1777; Colonel 1st Connecticut, 27th May, 1777; retired 1st January, 1781. (Died 1813).
