Music sheet, 10" x 13", color cover only, "Olney's Quick Step, respectfully dedicated to Captain J.N. Olney of the Brooklyn City Guard" by Allen Dodworth, 1846, Firth, Hall and Pond, New York. Striking color cover of the militia's first Captain, James Olney. Unusual in that the cover has Gold Ink.The Brooklyn City Guard was formed in August 1842, as a volunteer military company. A light artillery unit, it was celebrated by Brooklynites as a fashionable outfit known for its drills, parades, and balls. James N. Olney was its first Captain, a position he held for several years; he then moved to California during the Gold Rush, where he became a leader of the San Francisco Vigilance Committee; he would command the 2nd California Regiment in the Civil War.
