Confederate soldier letter written by G(reen) B(arry) S(amuels) (Jr.) who enlisted on 4/18/1861 at Woodstock, VA as a private into "F" Co. VA 10th Infantry and was POW 5/30/1862 Front Royal, VA.; Confined 6/15/1862 Fort Delaware, DE.; Exchanged 8/5/1862 Aiken's Landing, VA (Exchanged for Charles F Gardner 100th NY); Detailed 2/15/1863 (place not stated) (As Brigade Inspector); POW 9/19/1864 Winchester, VA.; Confined 9/27/1864 Fort Delaware, DE.; Oath Allegiance 6/12/1865. The four page letter comes with original cover addressed to his sweetheart. The cover has a 5 cent green Jeff Davis stamp with a Tudor Hall cancellation. The writer says in small part, “I visited the battlefield the day before we went on picket to gather some little mementoes to send you but could find nothing suitable. There were a number of young ladies on the ground at the time. I gave one of them a Yankee skull and showed her the spot we fought on and the graves of the enemy we killed. She certainly loved poor soldiers if I could judge from her countenance. As I bade her good bye, she said she prayed to God for our safety.....”
