BURGOYNE, Sir John Fox, 1st Baronet GCB (1782-1871) was a British Army officer. In the War of 1812, Burgoyne went to the United States and fought under General Edward Pakenham as chief engineer at the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815 and at the Second Battle of Fort Bowyer in February 1815. Autograph Letter Signed, “J.F. Burgoyne” 4pp., May 19, 1864 written to Captain Smith. In part, “I admire the ingenuity of your idea ... I do not perceive that you address to the objections raised in Col. Lovell’s report ... My objective is not to find fault or to criticize but to enable you to be fully prepared ...” At the time of this letter, Burgoyne was Inspector-General of Engineers and Director of Work. Near fine.
