1856 Silk Woven Textile of George Washington, Patriotic Commemorative French Silk Export, Custom Ornately Framed for Display, Choice Extremely Fine. This 1856 vintage Textile is of gold and white thread on cream-colored Silk. It measures 22" x 17" and has been matted and framed to an overall size of 36" x 27.5" in an Ornate Period gilt-gesso Handcarved Frame (no glass). This Stevensgraph style machine woven textile is produced with muted Polychrome Silk and features an oval, shoulder-length Portrait of George Washington with the famous: "First In War - First In Peace - First in the Hearts of His Countrymen" legend bordering the image, together with a spread-winged American Eagle surmount with woven makers mark, "Lyon 18JR56." The weave has an almost holographic effect viewed at certain angles with only some slight loss in the silk along the extreme upper left edge which is barely noticeable. A highly decorative and ornate carved frame was produced by "Thos. Agnew & Sons, Carvers, Gilders... 14 Exchange Street, Manchester..." being framed in England for export to America, as printed on an original aged, cracking label on the frames back. Thomas Agnew (1794-1871) was the founder of Thos. Agnew & Sons, art dealers. This beautiful and impressive example of this custom large Woven Silk of George Washington is ready to hang on display.
