The dead ball era of baseball used thick-handled bats. This one manufactured by "Reach No. 1M. Pat. Aug 1, 05" is characterized by the "Mushroom" knob and was meant to counterbalance the heavy barrel. According to manager John McGraw, mushroom bats "would balance the bat when choking." The bat measures 31" and weighs 37 ounces. Reach was the main bat manufacturer before Louisville Slugger took over the market in 1908 when they signed the first player, Honus Wagner, to an exclusive bat contract. Rare and vintage baseball relic. This is one of the very few mushroom bats that have survived the test of time. The engravings are deep and clearly decipherable on the barrel.
