Caption, “1961 New York, Yankees / World Champions.” Considered by many to be the greatest New York Yankees team, possibly the greatest baseball team of all time with the possible exception of the 1927 New York Yankees. Signing, but not pictured, are Yankees broadcasters Mel Allen and Phil Rizzuto. Allen is a Hall of Fame broadcaster, co-recipient of the HOF’s first Ford C. Frick Award in 1978. Eight ’61 Yankees made the All-Star Team, Ford won the 1961 Cy Young Award, Richardson the 1961 A.L. Gold Glove at 2nd base, and Ralph Houk was selected as 1961 Manager of the Year. It was also the year the Yankees belted a major league record 240 home runs, led by Roger Maris (61, breaking Babe Ruth’s record) and Mickey Mantle (54). In 1961, Ford broke Babe Ruth’s World Series record of 29.2 consecutive scoreless innings; the record eventually reached 33.2 innings.
