Former Andersonville POW Private William Lugenbeal, Company "F," 135th Ohio Infantry was heading home aboard the steamer Sultana on April 27, 1865 when her boilers blew, killing some 1,800 military passengers. Lugenbeal allegedly survived by killing the Sultana's mascot - an alligator - and using its wooden crate for a makeshift lifeboat. His postwar effects presented here include: Metal badge plate with chains engraved SULTANA; a stamped brass nameplate reading WM. LUGENSBEAL; a 1906 Columbus, Ohio 21st Union Veterans League Annual Encampment medal; an Ohio State Seal watch fob, the reverse engraved Wm. Lugenbeal / Sultana / Survivor. GAR POST / 331; small flag stickpin imprinted UNION EX-PRISONERS OF WAR; two Knights of Pythias braided cord epaulettes; all items in a dovetailed wooden box decorated with folk art carvings showing an alligator and reading WM. LOGENBEAL / CO F 135 OVM / SAVED /BY A/ ALLIGATOR. All items are in very good to fine condition.
