A complete and authentic of the Niles Weekly Register, December 6, 1823, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the interior and running 5-3/4 pages, under the “President’s Message,” we have a complete printing of President Monroe’s State of the Union Address, signed in type by the president, December 2, 1823. President James Monroe used his annual message to Congress for a bold assertion, “The American continents ... are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers....” This doctrine became a cornerstone of America’s foriegn policy.
