Nathaniel Woodhull (1722 - 1776). President of the New York Provincial Congress, brigadier general of the New York militia during the American Revolution. Broadside signed. July 1, 1776. Partly-printed DS. 1 page. New York, July 1, 1776. Appointment of Barent J. Ten Eyck “to be Lieutenant Colonel in the Regt. whereof Corn. Van Dyck is Col. In the troops raised, or to be raised, as aforesaid, for the Defence of American Liberty, and for repelling every hostile Invasion thereof. Barent J. Ten Eyck (1740 – 1810) served prolifically throughout the war beginning as a courier for the Committee of Safety , Correspondence and Protection in Albany in 1775 and later serving as an officer and a record of being overlooked for promotions and posts due to his drunkenness. Woodhull would die less than three months later on September 20, 1776 after having been captured and struck with a sword by a British Officer for not declaring his obedience to the King. A rare format of this commission by the New York Provincial Congress signed just 3 days prior to the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Folds with some light paper loss.
