A war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. James W. Hooper, Co. H, 5th New Hampshire, Camp Cashio [California], Washington, Nov. 12, 1861, to his father, in part: "…we took steamer and…landed. At Jersey City we took the cars…there is no rocks here. They build their rail fence here. They build their chimney out side of their houses. There was negrow [who] told us that they have their time when they are 21. He says that some are used well and some are used hard. There is not half so many whites as their blacks. Last night there was a nigro concert when we was half starved…direct the letters to Washington, D. C. Co. H, 5 reg. N. H. James W. Hooper." VG
