A complete and authentic issue of the Gentleman's Magazine, July 1740, 40pp., disbound, VG. Included within the volume is the very desirable map, ""A View of the Town and Castle of St. Augustine, and the English Camp.." The copper plate engraved map, 7-1/4" x 12-1/2" has an extensive legend. This is a depiction of British General John Oglethorpe's first unsuccessful expedition against the Spanish at St. Augustine. The bird's-eye view depicts the Matanza River, the castle, the North and South Channel, and warships in the foreground. A lengthy key and explanatory notes fill the bottom third of map. General Oglethorpe was the founder of the American colony of Georgia, which was situated as a buffer colony between Spanish Florida and South Carolina..
