AARON BURR (1756 - 1836). Vice-President of the United States; Lawyer; Best known for having killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel in 1804. Following an active role in the military during the revolutionary war, Burr returned to New York in the fall of 1783, setting up his legal practice and becoming a professional rival of Alexander Hamilton. Burr continuously aspired for political recognition, finally becoming Attorney General of New York State in 1789. This position gained him recognition and served as his political springboard, eventually becoming Vice-President under Jefferson in 1801. In 1804, Burr learned of Alexander Hamilton's longstanding covert campaign against him arising from their political differences, and this led to their historic duel in which Hamilton was fatally wounded.
