Bold Lincoln assassination-mourning broadside, measures 10 3/4" x 15 1/4", dated April 15, 1865, Utica, NY. One small piece of old tape at right top corner, light edge wear, else fine. In large block letters it reads "PUBLIC SORROW!" The news of the assassination of the President comes from the Mayors office, and orders that businesses close from 12 o'clock until 2 o'clock, during which bells will toll. The broadside also states that an attempt was made on the life of a Chief officer in Lincolns cabinet, referring to the attempted assassination of Secretary of State William Seward. Seward was attacked, and severely injured, by conspirator Lewis Paine whilerecovering from a carriage accident in bed at his home. Lincoln died the morning of the 15th, so the news traveled quickly to upstate New York. A rare and desirable Lincoln assassination broadside.
