Two authentic and complete issues of the New York Tribune, both 8pp., disbound and VG. Both issues are loaded front to back with war news. We are focused on just a few reports. The issue of February 2, 1863, displays a 5" x 5" front page map "Situation at Vicksburg" with a 2 column report below the map. Also from the front page "The Last of the Pirate Oreto" runs 1/2 column. ... plus, The issue of February 9, 1863, displays a scarcely seen front page illustration, 10" x 6-1/2", "The Pirate Steamship Oreto, or Florida", with detail of her capture below the image. Also, a 2 column report "News From Vicksburg". The Confederate strategy to attack Union commercial shipping with privateers and commerce raiders, called guerre de course, was often employed by weaker naval powers (including the United States). But the strategy came with more than its share of vulnerabilities. Oreto (aka Florida) wreaked havoc on Union shipping over two extended cruises, accounting for 60 of more than the 200 merchant ships lost to raiders during the Civil War.
