SHERIDAN, Philip Henry (1831-1888) was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. His career was noted for his rapid rise to major general and his close association with General-in-chief Ulysses S. Grant. MILES, Nelson Appleton (1839-1925) was an American military general who served in the American Civil War, the American Indian Wars, and the Spanish–American War. WHITNEY, Henry Howard (1866-1949) was a United States military officer who attained the rank of brigadier general. Four Endorsed Documents Signed “P.H. Sheridan, Lieut. General” on different discharges for Daniel O. Drennan, each with a comment. On the April 8, 1874, Sheridan comments “Corporal Daniel O. Drennnan, private clerk in charge of private & public papers for nearly Ten Years ....pleasant to acknowledge” ... plus, On the December 1, 1874, Sheridan comments “Daniel O. Drennnan has had charge of my official & private papers ... He is truthful, honest inteeligent, thorogh”. ... plus, On the May 1880 Sheridan comments “Daniel O. Drennnan has had charge of my official & private papers as Confidential Clerk for sixteen years ...” ... plus, On the July 6, 1886, Sheridan simply comments “Excellent”. ... plus, Sheridan’s brother Michael V. Sheridan also signs a discharge “M.V. Sheridan, AA Genl” on discharge May 7, 1885 with comment “Excellent”. ..., plus a Typed Letter Signed “Nelson A. Miles” on Headquarters of the Army Washington stationary, August 7, 1903 in small part “ Your long service in the Army, a part of which was in the Civil war, and the confidential relations held by you with Generals Sheridan, Hancock .... shown the esteem in which you were held by them, and which has continued in my case...” ... plus, Autograph Letter Signed “Henry H. Whitney”, May 27, 1903 acknowledging Drennan’s long service; There is also a typed “Record of Service” with notes; another discharge, 1891; and 3 Certificates of Service (Civil War period).
