First, “French and Rebel Attack and Repulse at Savannah,” is a 2-1/2 page printing of a letter of Captain Henry of his Majesty’s ship Fowey in which he describes the defeat of the French and American forces attacking the British at Savannah. The day-by-day account concludes, “They landed at first 4000, and at different landings 800 more; the rebels had 3000 besides some hundreds of free blacks and mulattoes ...” continueing, “We have every reason to believe this expedition costs them 2000 men.” This is followed by a 4 page printing of a letter from Major-General Prevost, commanding his Majesty’s forces in the Province of Georgia. An extraordinary official report to the British Secretaries of State begins with the status September 4, 1780 and continues with an entry for nearly each day until October 18, 1780. History advises that among the people who fought in this battle are Samuel Davis, father of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and Major Pierce Charles L'Enfant, future architect of Washington.
