CHEW, Benjamin (1722-1810) held several public offices Pennsylvania attorney general (1755-69), was chief justice of the Pennsylvania supreme court from 1774 until the outbreak of the American Revolution, when he was suspected of Loyalist sympathies. He was arrested but was discharged soon afterward. Fighting during the Battle of Germantown took place at Benjamin Chew's house in Germantown, Pennsylvania.Document Signed, "Benjamin Chew Regn. Genl.," on a 4pp., true copy, manuscript last will & testament, January 2, 1728, of Gibbs Jones, Philadelphia, *' x 12-1/2," VG. This true copy is dated October 19th, 1765.
