c. 1760 Colonial Period, Double Cruise or Betty Lamp with Attached Hand-forged Iron Metal Spike for Hanging, Very Fine. This design also known as a Whale Lamp, because the two pans were often filled with whale fats and oils and used with cloth wicks as lamps. This “Double” version has an extra pan that could be removed and used as a standalone lamp. The metal spike was used as both a hanger and as a spike to spear timbers for hanging. Also attached to this one is a long needle at the end of a short, thin chain, it’s purpose is unknown. This lamp measures about 9” tall and the pans measure a little over 4” from stem to stern. The iron surfaces are uniformly dark with original patina. A nice “double” format example.
