Letter datelined Delaware Ohio, April 12th, 1886, 1pp. requesting a review of a pension application for "Jeremiah Auction ... private Co. C, 5th Regt U.S.C.T., pension certificate No 213.415 ..... you will confer a great favor on a worthy soldier." With the letter is a 1/6 plate tintype of Austin in studio, full standing in uniform. Both VG. Jeremiah Austin enlisted 8/1/1864 he mustered into "C" Co. US CT 5th Infantry and was Mustered Out on 8/29/1865 at New Berne, N.C. The 5th United States Colored Infantry Regiment was an African American unit of the Union Army during the American Civil War. A part of the United States Colored Troops, the regiment saw action in Virginia as part of the Richmond-Petersburg Campaign and in North Carolina, where it participated in the attacks on Fort Fisher and Wilmington and the Carolinas Campaign.
