COL. GEORGE BOMFORD (1782-1848) Ordnance Chief and Inventor of the Columbiad Cannon. When the War of 1812 began, Bomford moved to the new Army Ordnance Department. First as assistant chief of ordnance, then chief from 1821 to 1842, Bomford promoted the use of the uniformity system to manufacturing small arms. He also attempted to standardize the army's field artillery. Partly printed Manuscript document on Ordinance Office letterhead: "You are hereby required to issue Capt. G. Porter, commanding Company A. 1 Arty at Fort Moultrie…such a number of old serviceable accoutrements, as may be necessary for the present service of his Company, Geo Bomford, Col. Of Ordnance…The above accoutrements are only intended for temporary service and will therefore be selected from the old stock on hand…" Dated Washington 1834, in Fine condition.
