This coin was minted sometime between 1540 and 1590 under the rule of Hapsburg King Ferdinand I. It displays the Madonna and Child — an image that became a hallmark of Hungarian coins in the 1400s before the Hapsburg dynasty took hold. Though the dynasty followed the same path as many new rulers and redesigned the currency of their realm, there was no way they could remove this important religious symbol or the accompanying legend “Patron of Hungary” as the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is the Patron Saint of Hungary.
