Manuscript document signed with x mark, “Mary Hix”, 1p., 7.5” x 9.25”, Dartmouth [Massachusetts Bay Colony], July 6, 1722. Legible ink on hand laid paper. A rare early businesswoman makes a plea to the court regarding the economic threat posed by another ferry operator.. It reads in part, spelling uncorrected, “Having had the fery at or over Accoakset [Acushnet] River stated to me for some years past who allways have used my utmost endeavor to transfor People as well and as Quick and with what safty I could by night or day…but now being thretned [threatened] by some people of setting up just by me…do make bold to aquaint the honored court with what is like to be done.” She requests that the ferry be prevented from operating or, “be kept within two miles of me either above me nor below me…” Lightly soiled and a few areas of small ink spills. Slightly irregular margins. Otherwise EX.
