Confederate broadside "REGULAR DAILY RATIONS OF FOOD FOR TROOPS." 1pp. 7-3/4"x7-1/4", listing various articles with note at bottom "On a Campaign or on Marches, the Ration of Hard Bread is 1 lb." Fine conditionThis broadside was among the papers belonging to Confederate Commissary Major John White Mitchell who was appointed to the staff position on July 28, 1862. Mitchell had originally enlisted as a 1st lieutenant in the 27th Virginia Infantry, Stonewall Brigade, in May 1861 and joined the commissariat after failing to retain his commission upon subsequent career in the army commissariat at brigade level under General Echols, Samuel Jones, Patton and Wharton, much of the time in West Virginia. Mitchell was paroled in Charleston, West Virginia in May 1865 and moved to St. Louis later that year where he practiced law and held elected office until his death in 1896.
