1/6th plate daguerreotype by Benjamin Dexter Maxham(1821-1899) originally from Vermont; went to sea at age 17; settled at Nantucket, where he learned to take daguerreotypes and then conducted a picture gallery for eight years; to San Francisco in 1849, where he engaged in business for four years; returned to Nantucket in 1853, then to Worcester, Mass. from 1854-58; returned to Vermont, 1859; to Salt Lake City, 1863, and became an agent to sell tithings of the Mormon church; then moved to Virginia City, Montana, where he bought and sold gold mines; to Vineland, N.J., 1870, where he organized the Vineland National Bank; established a school for feeble-minded children, called Maxham Cottage. This dag is housed in a "Grapes in Oval" case. About very good condition.
