This example of a "Hardpack" type knapsack is paint-stenciled with the regimental number 69 (4-1/2" tall) located on the center outer flap. The pack is of a type commonly worn by other New York militia units from the 1850's up through the early war period. The knapsack is constructed of a painted linen fabric laid over and attached to an inner wooden box frame. The front flap is composed of leather that has been applied with an enamel-patented paint and then is lined with a fine linen cloth on the inner face. Beneath the flap, covering the opening of the box area are two painted fabric flaps with cloth tape ties. The leather outer flap originally had a binded edging running down both sides and across the bottom, but unfortunately is now missing. The three Blanket straps originally located on the top of the pack are now has only two. Overall condition is somewhat dry. The pack's measurements are as follows: 13-3/4" in height x 15" width and 4" in depth.
