CDV of Commodor George Hollins, vignetted chest up. backmark by Fredricks, NYC, fine. George Nicholas Hollins, Sr., entered the U.S. Navy as a Midshipman at age 14, on Feb. 1, 1814, during the War of 1812. There, he served aboard the U.S.S. ERIE and in the defenses of Washington, D.C. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he had served for almost 47 years in the U.S. Navy (almost 17 years total at sea), was a citizen of Florida, and was commanding the U.S.S. SUSQUEHANNA, cruising at the Mediterranean Sea. Hollins and his ship left the coast of Italy on May 5, 1861, and arrived at Boston, Mass., June 4, 1861. Having considered himself a Southerner, he promptly resigned his commission, but it was not accepted and an order was made for his arrest. However, he had escaped to the Confederacy and was commissioned a Captain, Confederate States Navy, on June 22, 1861.
