H.P. Marble Image of Menomonee Reservation Indians, circa 1915. Although he once served as Mayor of Las Vegas and spent many years as an Indian Agent (1911-1926), Harmon Percy Marble is probably best known for his extensive photographic documentation of Native Americas. As an Indian Agent, Marble was assigned to many reservations in the Plains and Southwest areas, where he recorded the clothing and customs of Navajo, Menominee, and Sioux Indians. Group of four photographs, each 7" x 5" all by H.P. Marble to include; Eight fully dressed in skins and headdresses of Natives men standing behind four whites. Two of the Natives are wearing Peace Medals. ... plus, A group seven Native women and one white women. The Natives are dressed with necklaces, intricate shawls and blankets. ... plus, A brave and his squaw standing in front of their teepee. The brave has full headdress, hold the reins of his horse. The squaw is wrapped in a blanket. ... plus, Vertical image, shows a Native with full headdress, beside an armed officer in front of the teepee. These are period copy prints. The Menominee Indian Tribe's rich culture, history, and residency in the area now known as the State of Wisconsin, and parts of the States of Michigan and Illinois, dates back 10,000 years. At the start of the Treaty Era in the early 1800's, the Menominee occupied a land base estimated at 10 million acres; however, through a series of seven treaties entered into with the United States Government during the 1800's, the Tribe witnessed its land base erode to little more than 235,000 acres today. The Tribe experienced further setbacks in the 1950's with the U.S. Congress' passage of the Menominee Termination Act, which removed federal recognition over the Tribe and threatened to deprive Menominee people of their cultural identity. Fortunately, the Tribe won back its federal recognition in 1973 through a long and difficult grassroots movement that culminated with the passage of the Menominee Restoration Act, Public Law 93-197, on December 22, 1973.
