Capt. Charles Frederick Linthicum, Chaplain, born: Frederick Co., MD, 12.17.38. Linthicum was appointed Chaplain of the 8th Virginia Infantry on 10.31.61. Resigned 12.4.62 and appointed Adjutant General on the staff of Brigadier General Richard B. Garnett (1817-1863). Appointed Adjutant General on the staff of Brigadier General Eppa Hunton (1822-1908), Capt. Linthicum was killed in action at Cold Harbor, 6.6.64. Pre-war 4pp. letter with original cover, written by Charles Linthicum, datelined Bristow, Nov. 13th, 1860. In small part, "Bro. Young left on Monday and from that time I kept up the meetings two weeks, preaching nearly every night... I had the principle part of signing and praying ... To know that God accomplishes great ends by small means forbid my growing weary ... Twas then I felt as if 'clothed with the garment of salvation' and could exclaim with David 'That thy name is near, wondrous works declare'. ... "
