RIPLEY, Roswell Sabine (1823-1887) was an officer in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War and, despite being Northern-born, a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. He was also an author and a prosperous South Carolina businessman. War-date Autograph Letter Signed "R.S. Ripley Lieut. Col." 1pp. quarto, Head Quarters Fort Sumter, May 27, 1861, addressed to Colonel Mani gault at Charleston, and reads "I am truly sorry that the delay has occurred, but trust from a note from Lieut. Blake that the articles will be furnished today. I am anxious to get this to dispense with transportation. This stops the completion of the N.E. Casemate Battery until the articles arrive..."
