to include Alfred Ely (1815-1892) was a U.S. Representative from New York. He was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses (March 4, 1859 – March 3, 1863). While witnessing the First Battle of Bull Run, Congressman Ely was taken a prisoner by the Confederates and imprisoned in Libby Prison of Richmond, Virginia; he was there for nearly six months along with many others.Clipped signature “Alfred Ely”. ... plus, Reuben Eaton Fenton (1819-1885) was an American merchant and politician from New York. He was defeated for re-election that year. He left the Democratic Party to help organize the Republican Party,[ and was later elected, as a Republican, to the 35th, 36th, 37th and 38th United States Congresses, and served from 1857 to 1865.Signed Card, R.E. Fenton, New York”. ... plus, Edwin Denison Morgan (1811-1883) was the 21st Governor of New York from 1859 to 1862 and served in the United States Senate from 1863 to 1869. He was the first and longest-serving chairman of the Republican National Committee. He was also a Union Army general during the American Civil War. Signed card, “E.D. The New York City draft riots occurred during his tenure. After his term as mayor expired, Opdyke attempted to forbid blacks from participating in President Abraham Lincoln's funeral processional.
