Three mounted albumen photographs, each 8-3/4’ x 6-/12” to larger mount. These are Oklahoma Territory, Fort Smith Indian Territory photographs showing Judge Isaac Parker’s deputies. In each image, the deputies are well armed, most showing rifles and holstered pistols. Each of the images show +/- 40 deputies, usually in two rows, an occasional Indian or Black man. Each image is ever-so-slightly light, still unique. The U.S. Marshal drew a salary of 90 per month. The Deputy Marshals drew no salary. They drew mileage of 6 cents per mile whether tracking a killer or delivering court papers and summons. They also received pay of 2 each upon delivery of a summons or for each prisoner they delivered to courthouse at Ft.Smith, Arkansas. The court paid the cost of transporting the prisoners, which usually consisted of a cook, chuck wagon, prison wagon and several extra mules and horses. Over half, 109,of his deputies were killed in the line of duty, while they killed more than that many outlaws. Isaac Charles Parker (1838-1896) was an American politician and jurist. Indian Territory was an area of more than 70,000 square miles. He became known as the "Hanging Judge" of the American Old West due to the large number of convicts that he sentenced to death. In 21 years on the federal bench, Judge Parker tried 13,490 cases. In more than 8,500 of these cases, the defendant either pleaded guilty or was convicted at trial. Parker sentenced 160 people to death; 79 of them were executed.
