John Macpherson Berrien (1781-1856) was a United States senator from Georgia and Attorney General of the United States during the presidency of Andrew Jackson. In The Antelope case, John Berrien argued against Frances Scott Key and the freedom of slaves captured at sea noting that slavery “lay at the foundation of the Constitution” and that slaves “constitute the very foundation of your union.” Berrien was elected again to the U.S. Senate as a Whig serving there from 1841 until 1852.Autograph Letter Signed “Jn.
