WOODFORD, Stewart Lyndon (1835-1913) was an American attorney and politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives and Lieutenant Governor of New York. Woodford took part in the American Civil War as chief of staff to Quincy A. Gillmore, commander of the Department of the South, and as commander of the 103rd Colored Infantry Regiment. He attained the rank of colonel and the brevet rank of brigadier general. Typed Letter Signed "Stewart L. Woodford" 1pp. quarto on The Hughes League of the United States, March 9, 1908, addressed to Louis Wiley of the New York Times, and reads in part: "...Thanks for yours...with very interesting editorial from the Philadelphia Ledger...Did you note in the dispatch from Washington in the Sun of this morning the reference to Wall Street?..." Fine condition.
