JOHN ORDE CREIGHTON (1785-1888) Naval officer. He entered the navy as a midshipman in June 1800, served under Preble before Tripoli, became a lieutenant, 24 February 1807, and was attached to the frigate "Chesapeake," in June 1807, when she was attacked by the "Leopard." He was afterward attached to the "President," and was first lieutenant in her action with the "Little Belt," 16 May 1811. In 1813 he commanded the brig "Rattlesnake," with the rank of master-commandant, and was made captain, 27 April 1816. In 1829-'30 he commanded the squadron on the coast of Brazil. 1 page ALS stampless cover and letter free franked: "On Service" addressed to Lieut S. Champlin, U.S. Navy, Lebanon, Ct. Dated July 9th 1822: "I forward a letter which I trust May prove to be on the subject of your journey to Washington. I will thank you to let me know whether You deem another letter from me Necessary to the secy. Alas poor Alexr Perry I sincerely deplore his loss and feel for his good and venerable Mother…Providence R.I., Jno Orde Creighton" Somewhat heavy toning, mostly from the wax seal and folding bleed-through. Atop is a small autograph dealers description, circa 1940's taped. Edge wear, but still Very Good.
