1765, "The Objections to the Taxation of Our American Colonies" by the Legislature of Great Britain, Printed for J. Wilkie, London, Choice Extremely Fine. The 20 pages of this 8.25" x 5.5" bound pamphlet are quite crisp, and tightly trimmed along the right edges, affecting the ends of some words. This work came out at a critical time in America's growing discontent with the British government. The Stamp Act had gone into effect in 1765 and numerous arguments were raised against the measure based on the concept that the colonist's believed they had a fundamental right to tax themselves. Soame Jenyns, a British official, answered arguments against the right of the British government to tax in this pamphlet. Quoted in part: "The right of the Legislature of Great-Britain to impose taxes on her American Colonies, and the expediency of exerting that right in the present conjuncture, are propositions so indisputably clear, that I should never have thought it necessary to have undertaken their defense, had not many arguments been lately flung out, both in papers and conversation, which with insolence equal to their absurdity deny them both." This historically significant pamphlet helps detail the growing controversy regarding the right of taxation claimed by the British and is an essential addition to one's collection on America's fight for independence.
