A complete and authentic issue of the Gentleman’s Magazine (London), February 1742, 56pp., disbound, VG. From the interior, three letters and an illustration, all describing a Comet. One letter is signed by “Tho. Wright,” an English astronomer, mathematician, instrument maker best known for his publication “An original theory or new hypothesis of the Universe” (1750), in which he explains the appearance of the Milky Way. In small part, “The trail of the Comet pointed E, in the Right Hand of Hercules, and formed the Side of a Triangle with Lyra ...” He continues to explain his illustration. Another letter, by “Will. Whiston” who was an early advocate, along with Edmond Halley, of the periodicity of comets. In small part, “It is going almost Northward at some distance from Lucida Lyra, at the rate of about six degrees in a day, with a tail six degrees long, and will soon not set at all. ...”
