Engraving, "Hon' Laurens Esq Late President of the American Congress," 3-1/2" x 5-3/4," c1785, hand laid paper, tight trim to border of image, fine. Beneath his portrait is a scarce view of his presiding over a session of the Continental Congress. Henry Laurens (1724-1792) was an American Revolution Statesman; President of the Continental Congress (1777-78); captured by British on his way to negotiate with Dutch, confined in Tower of London; exchanged for Lord Cornwallis (1782).
