A complete and authentic issue of the Gentleman’s Magazine, February 1773, 48pp., disbound, VG. Just months before the passage of the hated Tax Act, there is an interesting report “An easy and practicable Plan for increasing the consumption of Tea augmenting the Revenue suppressing Smuggling ...” The plan runs 2 pages and requires the consumption of 7 million pound consumed within the British dominions (the colonies). ... Then from the Historical Chronicle sectioon, we find the detail of a duel between Lord Townshend, and Lord Belamont. The fully reported event covers 6 pages opening with, “The duell that has lately been fought between Lord Townshend, and Lord Belamont is one of those events ...never fail to excite the public curiosity ... the subsisting difference between Lord Townshend, and Lord Belamont was finally decided .... when the latter reciev’d a ball in the right side of his belly, near the groin. .... Lord Townshend fired first which gave the unfortunate wound, and Lord Belmont duscharged his pistol immediately after without effect. The Tea Act of April 1773 was one of several measures imposed on the American colonists by the heavily indebted British government in the decade leading up to the American Revolutionary War (1775-83). The act’s main purpose was not to raise revenue from the colonies but to bail out the floundering East India Company, a key actor in the British economy.
