OTIS, James (1725-1783) American Revolutionary statesman who fought in the courts to uphold the rights of the colonists, and later fought British revenue laws in the Massachusetts legislature with Samuel Adams. Autograph Document Signed, "James Otis", 1p. oblong octavo, Boston, August 10, 1779, being a receipt "For Value received I promise to pay Mr. Winston Warren One hundred & Eighty Three Pounds and demand with interest till paid..." Archival repair to verso along complete horizontal split, else VG.
